The Fire of 2019
The Notre Dame fire stopped time for many people on that fateful day in 2019. As the Flames climbed higher, night fell over Paris. Crowds gathered along the Seine River to watch. Tears flowed freely.
Still, even in this sad moment, hope showed up. Emergency workers rushed to save priceless artefacts from inside. In fact, they formed human chains to rescue precious items.
The Crown of Thorns made it out safely. This ancient relic is said to be worn by Jesus Christ himself during the crucifixion. So, while the structure was burned, its heart remained safe.
Restoration Effects
Bringing Notre Dame back took amazing skill and patience. To do this, workers used methods from long ago to stay true to history.
Nearly 1,000 workers and artisans worked on this special project. Architect Philippe Villeneuve guided every step with great care.
Incredibly, the new spire looks just like the old one designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Workers put it in place during December 2023. They cleaned years of dirt from the stones inside. The stained glass got careful attention, too.
Just like before, Oak trees became roof beams just like centuries ago.
Reopening in 2024
The big day finally came on December 8, 2024. Notre Dame opened its doors once again.
The reopening was celebrated with a ceremonial mass. Notably, dignitaries, including French President Emmanuel Macron, joined the celebration.

Notre Dame Today
When you walk into Notre Dame Cathedral today, you’ll immediately be struck by its brightness.
In fact, the interiors, once dark and dirty from hundreds of years of buildup, are now clean, and the light-coloured limestone shines beautifully. Moreover, the colourful stained glass windows look vivid and fresh.
In addition, there’s new liturgical furniture made of bronze altar and ambo – that looks modern while respecting the cathedral’s heritage.
Notably, the Crown of Thorns, which was saved from the fire, now sits in a new box made of cedar wood. As a result, visitors can see it up close on special days until April 2025.
While the interior is finished, workers are still fixing some parts on the exterior and the area around the cathedral. Specifically, they’re redoing the front courtyard and gardens to add more plants and make it easier for everyone to get around. This work should be done by 2027.
Even so, with these ongoing projects, the cathedral is completely open for tourists and church services.
